What is the reproductive health project?

GJL and the Status Project’s first research project is centered on adolescent girls and reproductive health: gender roles, expectations and attitudes. Specifically, the research goal is to better understand how gender role expectations influence girls’ reproductive health AND to inform efforts to improve reproductive health services and outcomes for adolescent girls in Philadelphia.

This project reflects a gender informed approach and is centered on the voices of a community of girls residing in Philadelphia. In the end, GJL and the Status Project seek to use this research to help launch a girls’ reproductive justice advocacy agenda and to make recommendations on reproductive health policy, practice and funding priorities.

Specifically, the research goal is to provide quantitative and qualitative data that, brought to bear on justice centered policy, practice and funding decisions, could increase the likelihood that girls will not be penalized by non-conforming gender role presentation, behavior and/or beliefs as a means to reduce the number of girls who transition from the juvenile justice system to the adult correctional system.

The approach requires the inclusion of the voices of a community of adolescent girls in Philadelphia and reflects a gender transformative action research approach. In the end, GJL and the Status Project seek to use this research to help launch a girls’ reproductive justice advocacy agenda and to make recommendations on reproductive health policy, practice and funding priorities.
